Trip Summary

This 3 day Machu Picchu whirlwind of a tour offers a quick jaunt out of Cusco to the ancient Incan citadel and Unesco World Heritage site at Machu Picchu.  It has a flexible any day departure and is best for those short on time or as an extension to an existing trip in South America, whether from a Galapagos cruise, Amazon Lodge program or another Peru tour. This tour can be further customized or extended to include additional services, accommodations, adventure activities, excursions and itinerary days in Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and beyond.

Begin with arrival into Cusco followed by a day of guided sightseeing in this ancient and colorful city. After an included overnight in Cusco, you'll awake early the next morning to catch the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes, where you'll then head by shuttle bus up the steep slopes of Machu Picchu to the see one of the world's most famous ruins for yourself. Returning that same day by train back to Cusco, you'll enjoy another overnight and breakfast in your hotel the next morning before departing or continuing on your travels in Peru or beyond. Itinerary Day By Day

Day 1

Welcome to Cusco- touch down, collect your luggage and meet your guide, then drive twenty minutes through the colourful South American streets to your hotel to leave your luggage and enjoy some down time. At 1pm meet in the Coffee Museum to enjoy a tasty included lunch and learn about the story and people behind this popular drink. After lunch step out into the Cusco streets and explore with one of our carefully chosen guides. They are not only very knowledgeable but also great fun to be with. You do not want to cram too much in on your first day at altitude, so relax and get used to being up high with a gentle walk around this old Inca capital. Visit the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral and the Qoricancha temple of the sun and perhaps take in the sights, sounds and smells of San Pedro food market too, where stands full of juicy exotic fruits, counters heaving with local provisions and cheerful local women selling handmade cheeses, local breads, healthy juices and even toad soup. The evening is free to relax and wander around the UNESCO World Heritage Site city center. [L]

Day 2

Machu Picchu

A bus transfer takes you to the train station where you take the early morning Vistadome train to Machu Picchu. The journey follows the impressive Urubamba river to the base of Machu Picchu itself. Your private English-speaking guide escorts you for the short bus ride direct to the ruins, colloquially known as the Lost City of the Incas. Once there, you can enjoy an extensive walking tour of the ruins and full explanation of this fascinating site. If time permits you can explore further to the Inca bridge, Watchman’s hut or try the strenuous climb to the sun gate – Inti Punku. Alternatively you may prefer to just relax and take it all in. After a full day to explore the site, you descend to the waiting train to enjoy one of the great train journeys of the world back along the Sacred Valley. Another bus transfers you back from the train station to your hotel. [B/L]
